Problems & Causes to consider during baking Cake

Sometimes even when you've followed a recipe, things can go wrong.  If your cake is too domed, has sunken, somehow burned...these are all issues that bakers run into at some point.  In the event that your cake has suffered an unfortunate series of reactions, here are possible reasons that it didn't work out.  They are listed in the order of highest probability.

Problem: The surface of the cake has cracked, peaked, or has large tunnels.

Cause: The oven may have been too hot or the batter was over mixed.

Problem: The cake has a coarse grain to it and a sunken center.

Cause: The oven may have been too cold, the batter was under mixed, or there was too much baking powder.

Problem: The cake didn't rise enough or it seems short and dense.

Cause: It could be that the baking powder expired or there wasn't enough added.  Also, if the eggs and/or butter were an incorrect temperature.
